Halloween Mix (OOOOHHH)

This is an extremely short mix because I was trying to avoid the obvious Halloween songs (that's why Monster Mash isn't on here). If you guys want a full cd of awesome Halloween music, go get Dead Man's Bones self-titled's Ryan Gosling (yes, that Ryan Gosling) with a children's choir singing weird indie songs about monsters. It's surprisingly awesome.
Now that I'm done plugging someone else's stuff...

Things I learned while making this mix:
  • Sufjan Stevens is kind of a genius
  • Not enough people make quality spooky songs
  • Screaming Jay Hawkins is really really weird
Next time there will probably be a punk rock sampler, hopefully it will appear before the end of the year?

2 Mixes about love (sort of)

So I was messing around on El-Jay and found a mixtape blog, and then lo and behold I realized, oh man, I have a mixtape blog, and I also have an abandoned meme that didn't even get to number 10 in the countdown of songs, and also I haven't posted since June and that's totally awful.
Meanwhile, I went mixtape crazy earlier this month when we didn't have internet for a while, so as long as I'm not doing my homework, I may as well pretend to be productive.

So: A double header, to make up for a summer of nothing.

Day 6

Day 01- A song that makes you happy
Day 02- A song that helps you clear your head
Day 03- A song that makes you laugh
Day 04- A song that reminds you of something sad
Day 05- A song that has a new meaning to you every time you hear it

Day 06- A song you can always relate to
Aside- The Weakerthans

Actually almost every song off their cd Left And Leaving, and almost every song of theirs in general. The Weakerthans are my spirit animal.

Days 2-4

Because I'm an idiot and forgot I was doing this meme, here are some more days of that music meme.

Day 01- A song that makes you happy
Day 02- A song that helps you clear your head :
When I'm freaking out about something, I blast punk rock at top volume in my earphones because I can't think when I'm listening to something that loud and alive.

Day 03- A song that makes you laugh
High Voltage- Electric Six w/ Jack White

I could put almost every song by Electric Six here, because they're a patently ridiculous band, but Jack White's falsetto on this song is hysterical.
Day 04- A song that reminds you of something sad
Because of stuff that I'm not talking about in a public setting.

Song-a-day meme, day 1

There are mixtapes coming, some will be two at a time. But until then, I'm going to do a 30 day song-a-day meme and post all the songs for download. Maybe they'll fit as a mixtape when it's all said and done.

Day 01- A song that makes you happy

Home- Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes

Optimist Vs. The Silent Alarm- Casiotone For The Painfully Alone

These songs never fail to make me grin my face off they are so charming and lovely.

Summer 2010

My finals are almost over, and thus it is finally time to share this summer mixtape I made. I've been a bit lax on the mixing front, because of the aforementioned finals, but I hope this one will satisfy.

It is a mostly cheerful cd with a little bit of bittersweet knowledge that this won't last forever, that we will have to go back to real life some day, and that the hot weather is sometimes kind of a pain in the ass. This is music for driving to visit people, listening to by the pool, or while mixing margaritas for your friends and singing along, for back porches and summer jobs and biking in the heat.
Mostly indie music but there's a higher-than-usual concentration of classic rock and other guitar-driven music. Some of this music is very new and some of it is very old, and someday I will do an all-classics summer mix (maybe in June when we need it).

Mixtape #1: Fourteen Covers

Precipitated by the fact that my friend Evan and I spent over an hour last night looking for The Shins' cover of a Magnetic Fields song...I'm very picky about covers and get absurdly excited about every good one I find.

This CD starts off kind of 80's, and then gets soft and indie, and then ends up rocking in the end. Also someday I'll do an only Beatles cover mix, but not today.

I'm a music lover, and a lover of mixtapes. I'm old enough to remember a time before cds, but too old to have made or recieved a real mixtape, and it's left a hole in me that I'm filling with cds and playlists and anachronistic language. I make mixtapes constantly, and I refine and adjust like I'm writing the songs myself. It's a lot of trouble to go through for something that's going to get shuffled on an ipod anyway.

There are other communities like this one, where people share their musical tastes with the rest of the internet, and I love the unique glimpse into other people's music libraries. I've discovered artists, b-sides, and rarities, and I want to keep sharing. My tastes run towards the indie/rock end of the spectrum, but I listen to a wide variety of music and I'm hoping if other people join the community we can cover a wide range of mixtapes.

If you want to be a part of this project, pm me and I'll add you right away. This is a community for mixtapes, not full cds or discographies. All the songs should be treated as samplers for the original artists, who you should pay because they're awesome.

Hopefully we can get a good community going, and discover some amazing music!
